V&A visit in the summer.
Martha Edlin's Embroidery, This stunning 'Stumpwork' or raised embroidery was worked by a girl called Martha Edlin (1660-1725) dated 1671 Martha embroidered the panels of this casket when she was just eleven, mostly these boxes were worked in panels something like a modern embroidery kit, artists would design the panels then paint the outline onto the silk fabric in oil paints for the young embroiderers to fill to their own taste and interpretation, when completed the finished Embroidery would be sent to a cabinet maker for assembly, as we know, work of this nature is very time-consuming so imagine the excitement on the assembled return of your box.
